What is your expertise?
My expertise is commercial real estate. I've been working in the notarial profession since 2012 and have specialized in guiding real estate transactions. I am involved in the entire process: from the initial negotiations and drafting a Letter of Intent (LOI) through to the legal completion and execution of the deed of transfer.
I advise clients not only on the purchase or sale of real estate, but also on mortgage financing and the subdivision into apartment rights. Sometimes a sale is structured as a tender, and I guide that process. In addition, I establish, amend or terminate rights of superficies and leasehold rights. In the past, I have handled sale-and-leaseback transactions and guided the sale of healthcare real estate, where approval from the College Sanering (Dutch Health Care Restructuring Board) is an additional point of attention.
Thanks to my years of experience, I can translate complex legal issues into practical, workable solutions.
Why does this role suit you well?
I'm someone who likes rules, good planning and solving puzzles. All of that comes together in the work I do. I find it interesting that parties in real estate have a great deal of contractual freedom, while property law sets clear boundaries. That combination is precisely what makes it challenging to devise structures that are legally sound and optimally aligned with the client’s wishes. That kind of puzzle suits me well.
What appeals to me about real estate is that it is tangible. When I drive around in the Netherlands, I regularly see projects that I have been able to contribute to. That makes the work concrete and visible.
What can clients expect from you?
Clients can count on an involved adviser who has an eye for both the legal details and the commercial interests of the transaction. I think it is important to explain complex matters clearly and to actively contribute ideas for solutions that are practical and feasible. Keeping the timeline on track and ensuring it is clear to everyone what they need to do is one of my strengths.
Because of my experience with a wide range of real estate, I am used to switching quickly between different parties and interests. My goal is to unburden clients throughout the entire process and to ensure that a transaction runs smoothly and carefully.
What's your educational background?
After completing my degree in Notarial Law at Utrecht University, I started in 2012 as a deputy civil law notary at NautaDutilh in Amsterdam. There, I specialized in commercial real estate. From 2013 to 2016, I completed the Professional Training Programme for the Notarial Profession. I then further specialized by completing the post-academic Grotius Real Estate programme (2017-2018).
In June 2020, I switched to Hermans & Schuttevaer Notarissen, now Westvaer, where I have continued to develop my real estate practice.
